Pallet racking inspections are a legal requirement in the UK to ensure the safety of workers. They should be carried out by a competent person, such as a SEMA approved racking inspector (SARI). The purpose of these inspections are:
- To check the condition of the racking
- To ensure the racking is safe to use
- To ensure the racking is properly maintained
- To ensure the racking is not overloaded
How often
- The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends inspections at least once every 12 months
- The frequency of informal inspections should be based on the manufacturer's recommendations
What to look for
- Bent beams, dents, or other signs of damage
- Loose bolts or fasteners
- Untight connections
- Leaning or misaligned uprights
- Correct signage
- How stock is being stored
Other guidelines
- Start the inspection at one end of the warehouse
- Examine uprights at the ends of the rows
- Scan each side for damaged or sagging beams
- Inspect each upright and beam as you move down the aisle
You should also ensure that racking is highly visible, protected physically, and never climbed on.
