Pallet racking inspections are a legal requirement in the UK to ensure the safety of workers. They should be carried out by a competent person, such as a SEMA approved racking inspector (SARI). The purpose of these inspections are:

  • To check the condition of the racking
  • To ensure the racking is safe to use
  • To ensure the racking is properly maintained
  • To ensure the racking is not overloaded

How often

  • The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends inspections at least once every 12 months
  • The frequency of informal inspections should be based on the manufacturer's recommendations

What to look for

  • Bent beams, dents, or other signs of damage
  • Loose bolts or fasteners
  • Untight connections
  • Leaning or misaligned uprights
  • Correct signage
  • How stock is being stored

Other guidelines

  • Start the inspection at one end of the warehouse
  • Examine uprights at the ends of the rows
  • Scan each side for damaged or sagging beams
  • Inspect each upright and beam as you move down the aisle

You should also ensure that racking is highly visible, protected physically, and never climbed on.
